Why the hell it do that? 1993 300D injectors

I posted on the another thread about the rough idle smoky smelly exhaust and figured it has to be the injectors. I went to remove them the number one injector required a two foot extension to bust it loose. the number five was already loose and wobbling around the hole. the others weren't even tight. Do injectors rattle loose on their own? Also there was this plastic sleeve around the injectors that disintegrated with the slightest force. Do I need them? they look like something to protect the threads.

You do not need the plastic collars.

The plastic collars where eliminated in a service bulletin per MB engineering = NLA.

It sounds like the injectors where not installed correctly.

The heat shields must be replaced with NEW, before re-installing the injectors.

would the improperly torqued injectors, particularly the loose tooth one cause me the rough idle and smoke grief?

Yes, if they were all loose and not sealing properly you would be loosing compression causing uneven firing as well as incomplete combustion...

well that sucks, I just spent 333 dollars on reman injectors when a retorque of the old one may have fixed it.

Even valves out of adjustment can cause rocking. I adjusted the 84SD this weekend and was amazed at the change. A couple were tight. The engine starts quicker and idles better.

Strange because the valves were adjusted not too ong ago. Other cars I've owned with solid lifters became loose, not tight. I wonder what's up.

He has hydraulic tappets...no adjustments. It is possible that a weak tappet is causing the shake, but I think the loose injectors are explanation enough.
