thought on high miles 2006 CDI
CDI owners/experts. There is a 06 CDI listed in Metro atlanta with 191 K on the odometer. What is a reasonable expectation of engine and transmission life on this car? The 06 CDI is probably the best diesel until the inline 4's get down into my price range

As you await replies from the owners and experts (I am neither), I will note that I've seen some advertised in the mid 250k to 300k range, but I wonder if we have to look outside the US to see the upper limits of that engine and transmission. Were they in use in Europe before 2005?
This will be the next car I buy. I would not hesitate to buy one with less than 200k miles....if it was well maintained and the price was right. For a few thousand more, you can get one of those in Atlanta with 107,000 miles on it.

CDI
Mine has 194k miles and I think I need new shocks. The brakes I changed front 10k miles ago easy and $70 the rears were easy also 2k miles ago $104. At the beginning of last year I changed the transmission fluid. Really it was not that easy. And cost almost $200. I turned off the EGR last year also. Mine rides a little like a low rider I assume because I always have 200 pounds in the trunk and sometimes 400 pounds. It is starting to cause the tires to wear on the inside. My hood supports do not work anymore. I should probably change those. I change the oil every 5k miles just in case.
It is actually shocking how well everything works. And how little wear there is on the inside. I polished the headlights two years ago and they still look almost new. I have been running mine on WVO since 150k miles, it is the last of the diesels that is easy to convert to WVO. How cheap are they with 190k miles? Because I still owe $10k to the bank for mine. |

Well the asking price on this one is 10K so I would be right there with you. It was super nice I thought. The engine compartment had plastic over everything but what I could see looked good.
I thought it drove well, cruise and climate control appeared nice. The vehicle check reads like a one owner car. I did notice in the maint book that the next service stubs stopped being pulled out and the last one was marked to be at 93K. So did they stop taking it to the dealer at that point? I know which MB dealer. Can they or will they pull the maint records for me if I ask? I will look around for all your posts

The dealer will give you any recall repair info, but they invoke the privacy ploy for the previous owners' records. I tried to "buy" into the records by having some work done to the tune of $800 and it did work more or less. More records, but not everything. You might find the sprinter forum interesting. http://sprinter-source.com/forum/

So far from scouring forums it looks like these engines are pretty bullet proof and the tranny is good too if serviced. I'm going to attempt to see the 107K one.
I also take that initially M1 0w40 Euro formula was acceptable but it looks like the recommended oil was changed to the same spec as the Bluetec oil, probably because it has more diesel type additives. It looks like other than lots of gadgets it appears to be a pretty robust car

I can not comment on the mileage since mine has less than 100K but I have seen plenty on ebay and craigs upwards of 180K and a couple over 200K. I don't think these cars will end up seeing the same mileage of the W123 chassis because of a more complex engine design and DOHC (though I hope they will) but I wouldn't shy away from a car with 190K IF it has been properly maintained, in fact I was going to buy one with almost the same mileage that was in PA, the owner wanted $12K, I offered $10K I believe but never heard back from the guy.
If the one with 107K miles has a decent price, I of course would rather buy that, again, depending on the maintenance and service records. These cars can be had with under 100K miles for around $12K-$15K, one just needs to be patient. I bought mine for $15K with 69K miles and though it was in good shape, it was not trouble free. I am putting money into it, some because it needs it, some because I want the car to be in excellent shape both aesthetically and mechanically, but based on what I saw when I was looking, any car you buy will require some money to be spent at one point or another. Best of luck finding yours and post pics and details when you do! I found plenty on Craigslit eBay (several decent cars had been sod at no reserve for $13K and under with 100K miles or less) CarGurus Autotrader.com

I drove that one tonight. It was outstanding. Guy has replaced it with an e250 bluetec. Tranny on the CDI was serviced at 66000. I'm definitely tempted to get that one. A true one owner car. He has been using an European luxury Indy in the ritzy part of Atlanta where he lives.
