Craigs list adventures

Well I have seen 4 cars on Craigslist. 3 of which are viable.

1. 1996 E300 that was rust. Uggh. If I was desperate I would think about it but it was bad. I honestly think it needed a full front end rebuild including perches. Not worth it.

2. 1997 E300 (143K) Drove ok. I think it needs motor mounts but everything seemed to work and he had just done the glow plugs. This would be my low price option

3. 06 cdi with 190K Not a bad car fairly well maintained and seems to have a clean history. A decent price. My mid price range option.

4. 06 cdi with 108K Cosmetically identical and superior to car 3. It had a few less options but is an extremely nice car. Possibly a legitimate excellent condition. Glowplugs had recently been done. This is a legitimate one owner car that needs to clear out a garage space for an e250 bt that has replaced it. This is the car I want if I decide I can afford it. The asking price is very reasonable.

$500 --- Booneville, MS --- 1978 240D automatic transmission

I called the guy and we discussed. He's pretty firm on the $500. With my hurt back and it being about 2 hours from me, I couldn't convince myself to go take a look at it.

Here's what I know about the car:
Owner says he (or his Dad) bought the car 4 years ago. It wouldn't start; he replaced the glow plugs and got it to start, but it was still hard to start --- he's thinking there may be air in the fuel lines. I'm thinking either low compression or valves need adjusting.
The passenger side headlight was broken when he bought the car, he removed the broken pieces; they are in the trunk.
Odometer says about 140K miles
The only rust he knew about was the underside of the hood --- apparently the hood pad retains moisture???

The phone number listed in the ad has an answering machine on it; Seller usually gets home after 3:30pm CDT
