1986 300SDL with flashing ABS light?
I don't have a owner manual.
What is the error when the ABS light flashes in the 1986 300SDL? At a complete stop, the light is off. When I start moving the light flashes and at low speeds the car pulses like there's an issue with the idle. No fuses appear to be burned out. What should I look for? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. |
Sounds like your over voltage protection relay has a cracked solder joint. It's the one with the clear top and red fuse on the top. Open it up and resolder it :)
That relay powers the ABS computer, EDS computer (idle speed), and SRS computer. -J |
How do I open it up to resolder it?

Uncrimp the can :) I can't remember the exact steps I took, I believe I uncrimped the bottom of the can, removed the fuse, then slid the can off the "guts" of the relay. I recall there being a gasket on the bottom of the can that I ended up ruining as I pried it apart, so I secured the bottom of the relay back on with electrical tape when I was done.

Thanks J. I'll give it a try. Keenan MB is getting me a new one, but I'm stranded until it's working again.
Thanks for the advice my friend. :) |
You can just unplug it and live without ABS or proper idle control. It will idle low, but should drive fine.

Is there any risk associated with running the car without the relay? Like too much voltage burning something out?

No, you will just not have a tach, abs, or SRS. I don't know if the climate control would be affected, however I would have no reservations about driving my car home without the OVP relay connected.
