I pulled this wire off when working on thermostat

Hi,

I have a 1985 300 SD. Was changing out the thermostat and pulled this wire out of the top sensor. Wondering if I am supposed to solder it to the connection in the plastic housing cap or is it somehow only supposed to make contact with the metal. I tried cleaning the soft metal top area and I see some copper in one spot, which leads me to believe that I should solder it together.

here is a photo of the wire and the plastic connector. I stripped the wire a bit in order to prep it....

Yes, it should be soldered. If you heat up the end of the connector you'll find it's filled with solder. Heat it, knock all the old solder out, put in the wire, and add new solder

Coolant temp sensor is my guess. I broke the wire on my bro's 80 300SD as well so i have to solder it.

I knew 2 months ago when I posted on the other coolant temp sensors on the driver's side of the head (search). If I recall correctly, it is an on/off switch that prevents the cabin blower fan from blowing until the coolant is above a certain temperature (then it shorts to gnd). Mercedes wouldn't want to blow cold air on their finicky buyers. Most of us bottom feeders decades later don't give a rat's @ss, and would rather have the blower come on when we push the button. As is, we get constant questions here why the blower takes a long time to come on.

Bill, if you had a 240D the Blower would come on any time you twist the Knob. This one time a 240d does not lag behind.
