New ignition lock for the W116 does not house the replacement tumbler. I now have $200 paperweights on the bench: New ignition lock along with a replacement tumbler...

The tumbler is the issue so my question: Does a new ignition lock for an 1981 W126 fit on a 1980 W116? From pictures I have seen they appear similar; the only difference being is the location of the vacuum actuator for diesel are on the opposite side.

Are there any other members that have successfully replaced the ignition lock on a W116 with a W126 ignition lock?

Yes, I was told by the dealer that the exact match was no longer available, so I had to swap in the newer version. I was also told that they no longer key them to the VIN, either; you bought a tumbler with a random keying. I replaced the electrical switch assembly at the same time, and I had no compatibility issues. As I recall the original trim ring did not work with the later tumbler, so I am driving without a trim ring (oh, the horror!).
