The car came with one from the factory, so the absence of one means it was left off when the starter was replaced previously. Not a big deal IMO. The designers over engineered many parts on these cars, and the starter bracket is no exception. If one bolt on a bracket is good enough for most applications, MB designers design it with three. Part of their reasoning is that anything you bolt to a Diesel engine, it will try to vibrate it off. I have seen more starters without the bracket than I have seen them with.....Rich

The starter is quite long and weighs a lot - a vibrating engine can make it vibrate like a tuning fork - hence MB put that support there.

The supports did not come with the non turbos or the 240's....I removed the original starter from my 78 and 82....and they never had a bracket installed. The starters didn't have the mounting holes on the rear either...

Seeing that yours has the mounting bolt holes, means you got a turbo starter! It is really an amazing feeling to have the car pop on the first turn of the key....and when it gets cold out, you will be very impressed what a new starter will do for starting! Its one item I constantly get yelled at about, when I tell people to replace them.....its because I know the effect of having a good starter vers an 30 year old one.

That explains why I have not seen many braces on starters I have worked on. A few have been turbos, and at that, only a couple actually had the brace. One had the brace on the starter, but no bolts in the block.

Its one thing, I haven't figure out is why turbo's got the brace as the starter is the same across the board. I am actually glad the non turbo's don't have it...one less thing I have mold my had to in order to remove it

Just like the strange thing mercedes did with the starter, giving cars in warmer climates the low power starter.....its like what, you thought these people would never travel to a colder climate?

Same with the block heater, I haven't needed one....but I would sure have liked to have had the option of having one.
