Source for a 240D motor with automatic

Greetings..

Been a while since I've been on here.

I had to give up last year on my "ultimate arctic benz" (see the thread title)
I did keep my espar heater and some of the mods.. but the car went to the scrap heap.

Now I'm only driving my low mile 91 300D. BUT.. I'd love to re engine another project.

I have a 1967 Thiokol IMP snowcat. It came with a V4 gas powered ford motor. It's the same as a saab sonnet I'm told. It's only about 54hp, and a manual. The rear end in the cat is the achillles heel, and I'm in process of getting it rebuilt for more money than I have in the cat total!

My wish is to go with an automatic transmission, and with a MB diesel. I was thinking a 4cyl 240D engine is a small power boost, and with the auto transmission will be nice on the cat's rear end.

My local pick and pull's have given up on the old benz's long ago. Anyone got any ideas on yards that have one? I'm thinking the inline 4 will be narrow and small enough. Cat is SMALL. Engine is right between the two front seats, and cab of cat is maybe 4 and a half feet wide.

If anyone has a 240, and is willing to take a tape measure to the engine width.. I'd appreciate it.

And since I KNOW, every thread has to have a pic.. I'll include one here.

THanks
JP

Basically, almost no junkyards around here have any W123s. I'd suggest a rusty parts car instead.

Thanks for the pic, that looks cool!

There's always at least 1 W123 or W126 over here in the yards in CA.

My 240D motor is out of the car and sitting on the ground. I can take some measurements for you. I would consider giving it to you, but its got a knock and has sat outside through the rain. I'm going to take it as a hobby to rebuild it over the summer (except the issue of time).

Is the engine bay not large in your car/truck/thing? I would go with something like the OM617 instead of the 616 just for the premise of power. Then again, not like you'd be going that quick anyways. Just tell me what to take the measurement of and I'll take it. It might take me awhile though because of school but I have to head home tomorrow to pick something up so I can do it then.

I also have an automatic transmission that is probably close in measure to what you might put in your truck if you want me to measure that too. Its also a piece of junk and will be trashed when I am done with the project unless someone wants it for a weird reason.
