W124 300D Center Vent Pod Replacement

So I appear to have lost my center vent air flow.

I pulled vacuum on the pod's vac line and got nothing.

From what I can tell this pod lives inside the blower box and the entire dashboard has to come out for it to be changed.

I just wanted to double check that with the good folks on the board here.

I'm not sure how willing I am to do it myself. Might farm the job out to my shop...its probably a $500+ job in labor alone I think.

Figure I'd be best to replace all the pods at the same time?

Gut it where center vents are open all the time and never look back. You can use the manual adjustment if you want to close it off.

Is there any way that I can do that without removing the dash? I would say no.

I agree with gutting it. I would much prefer it that way.

I had that pod tied to constant vacuum (which might have accelerated its undoing) and enjoyed having heat out of it in the winter time.

My 91 works fine, my 92 works most of the time....sometimes I have to whack the dash!

Still amazes me that MB engineers designed it up this way.

Once upon a time (before swapping out the ACC for a manual system) I propped the flap open with a wine cork - cut a little "v" into it for the flap to have a kind of shelf to grab to; could still use the vent control to regulate the airflow. You can get in there by pulling the glove box and then peeling back the little rubber boot. Kinda tight to get your fingers in there but very do-able.

Rubber boot? Hrmmm this is an interesting approach. Any pictures of the path ? or anything.

center vent vacuum dashpot

Mine has been propped open for years, but... it leaks vacuum and I have maybe 15 seconds to exit the car and lock the doors before the vacuum bleeds down and the doors won't lock.
So I found a good dashpot on a 300D in the U Pull yard, someone had already pulled the dash so I got a good look at it. Not only did the MBZ engineers make it very hard to get at, but they also installed it with one-way single use spring washers on plastic mount studs that cannot be removed without destroying the studs. So I may order a new one anyway.
Here is a link to a thread which discusses how to replace the center vacuum dashpot. PeachPartsWiki: Replacing the HVAC Vacuum Actuators
If you had a borescope, an assistant, small hands, and a lot of patience, you just might be able to do it this way.

Good luck!
