Clear Transmission Fluid

I just purchased a 1999 E300 TD with 103,000 miles, to replace the 1999 E300TD that was totaled last week.
Today going through the fluids, I checked the trans fluid and it is clear. No odor or burnt smell, just clear. You can't even see it on the dip stick. When some is placed on a white paper towel, there is just the faintest pinkish tint, which could be residual from the previous fluid.

The trans shifts well and doesn't exhibit any problems.
I've done a search and there didn't seem to be any definitive answer, so I was wondering if anyone knows of any top line ATF that is clear?

Haven't heard of that, but it is possible the dye simply faded. For example, DOT 5 silicone brake fluid is blue when new, but usually fades to a lighter amber over time. Some people worry that indicates rust or such, but is just the dye changing.

I know some transmission fluids are a light amber / honey color. I've never seen the OE 722.6 fluid so I can't comment on what color it should be.

Maybe they put tractor fluid in it. I read a couple posts on this forum about John Deere Hy-Gard giving good results - supposed to "grab" a little better than other ATF. I've been running it in my W123 coupe for a couple of years and it seems to be an improvement over whatever I had in there before. It's clear, too - fits your description.

I'm pretty sure the fluid that the newer MB transmissions take is in fact clear. The fluid my father in law used in his 99 230 Kompressor was clear (and it was the correct MB spec fluid).
