Separate note, you may get lucky with repairing the front balancer, simply replace the hub with new and get a used balancer.

The final torque is some really high number, you'll need the locking tool to hold the crank. You may want to get it all assembled, then take to a good indie for the final torque of the front hub.

great info on the vac pump, thanks!

I was reading about the torque value on the crank pulley, Im wondering how it ever got loose in the first place. The story is the guy who sold me the car drove it for years, then sold it to a friend, who then drove it a couple years and suddenly this issue appeared out of nowhere with the pulley falling off and the woodruff key shearing off.

His theory is that the guy was using the crank bolt to turn the engine and loosened the bolt in the first place. I haven't found this woodruff shearing issue mentioned on the forum, it feels very much like a created problem, not something that happens every now and then to these engines.

Congratulations. That car looks like it has a lot of potential. Never judge it till you give it a good buff and wax, some of the cars I thought were worse than they were always turned out the best.

Judging by the trunk lid it looks like it's been rear-ended at some point. The sticker is in the incorrect place. Then again, who cares if you got it cheap. I had my 2.5 and I still do but it got slightly rear-ended and I have to replace and fix some of the metal with my junker parts 260E.

The 2.5 is an awesome motor. They ain't no slouch when they run right. First thing I did was the Vacuum Pump and rebuilt the Injectors. Mine is close to yours in mileage, so I suggest HIGHLY you replace the pump and rebuild injectors if they haven't been replaced. Especially that pump, mine was on its last leg when I bought it. Run some Biocide in it too when you get the chance and clean out the gunk.

I'm jealous by the way, my 300D is Spruce Green. I always wanted a Almandine Red W124. Just out of curiosity, what was the price when you say it was cheap?

I bought it for 500 bucks, and it drove up on the flatbed. Thats only a little more than what the yard offered the guy for it, so I could recover my costs easy parting I figured, if I couldn't get it going reliably.

My big worry is the possibility that the motor overheated when the pulley came off, I guess Ill just have to get it back together and see what it does. It seems to run ok, but for a few seconds at a time without a water pump. Plus its nice outside, temp is great, even a bad motor might start nicely in current conditions.

Ill check for accident damage, there is a little trunk lid rust, but it looks ok back there. Ill never know, as this car is too old for a title locally.

At $500 you stole it IMO. That would be a deal that I would not pass up. You at least saved it from the wrecking yard vultures (I know what they are, I am one of them :D)....Rich

i wouldnt be too impressed, it definitely needs lots of tender loving major repair before it can be driven.
im thinking another grand sunk into it over time is probably more what the car reflects

I think his wife could :D.

Gatorblue92 is actually the first "usual suspect" that came to mind for me... maybe he was bluffing by asking if it was me!

I don't think Shertex would be posting bail, but Gatorblue might... I could see him banging on the locked pilot's door in an airplane, shouting "MAÑANA TURKEER! MAÑANA TURKEER!"
