Can an engine from an 84 300D be turbo'd without any problems?

Thank you for your help.

The short answer since you said without any problems is: not really.

The long answer is of course it can be done, how long it will last is the question.

When Mercedes Turbo'd this engine, they changed nearly everything. Other people here are more qualified, to give a list of all the changes, I only know is a substantial list.

This is a european-market car you have?

All 82-85 w123 300Ds were delivered to the USA and Canada as turbodiesels.

Google your question and look for a while. The simple answer is no. While the NA and turbo om617 look outwardly the same, internally there were a great number of differences. Adding a turbo to a non-turbo engine will shorten the life of it significantly.

Turbo om617 engines can be had cheaply on craigslist and swapping a complete turbo engine into your car would not only be easier, but would have a far better result as well.

This is not a recommendation to do so.

Unless it's a Euro or someone's swapped in an older engine, it should already be turboed. Look under your air cleaner.

A 1984 300D should already have a turbo unless its a Euro gray market car or the engine was swapped with a different one.

For the price of adding a turbo to a naturally aspirated car, you could just swap in a turbo motor.

I'm about to scoop up a 82 Euro 300d with manual trans. Non turbo, manual windows, no A/C, euro bumpers. It's a cool bare-bones car. It is kinda strange, under the hood it reminds me of my old US 75 300d. Not much clutter! The valve cover definitely looks smaller than the turbo.

Plus if I ever want to, I can drop in a turbo diesel and I have the correct trans/flywheel.

After owning a few 300d's for 10 years and selling my last one 3 years ago, it feels good to be back!

You'll find out that a properly maintained euro 300D, is a lot better then a turbo 300.....has tons of get up in go and can well be raced...Would also love to see photos of your euro!
