How often to replace oil prefilter Nylon Screen W115

For the 115 617 engine.

Usually just clean it and put it back but wondering when its time to chuck it.

Thx

Considering a new filter is a couple of bucks, I replace them when they get dirty.

In my w123, on my local fuels, they don't seem to get dirty nearly as badly as the main spin-on filter does. Mine seem to last at least twice as long as the main. Although I always feel a bit wasteful about it, I generally replace them rather than clean them when they get dirty since they are, after all, designed as replaceable items and no doubt built accordingly. The screen could come loose inside due to heat/vibration, I imagine.

On the other hand...so what? The main filter would catch whatever got through until the next full filter change/inspection finds the problem. You'll live.

Maybe just replace the thing every other year or so in order that your filter will always be reasonably new and otherwise just clean it.

Are you referring to the primary filter under hood, or the tank screen?

If the former, change it out when it gets dirty, cheap and easy.

The tank screen can stay unit you develop fuel issues and exhaust all other potential problems.

My bad, I didn't specify it was the nylon screen in the oil filter housing.

I seem to recall that there IS a replacement interval listed in the service documentation, but it has been so long ago that I don't remember how many miles you were supposed to replace it. I think it might have been in the neighborhood of 50 to 60 k miles. For routine oil changes, I used to keep a spare, which I would swap at every oil change so I could clean it later. I sure don't miss doing oil changes on those beasts, LOL.

Doh!

Missed the word oil.

The only thing I can find is a strainer attached to the oil pump, or am I missing something?

Likewise. I was just thinking of the fuel prefilter. I've never heard of an nylon oil filter in the housing, to be honest, but I'll bet it's time for it to be changed on my car. Guess it's time to hit up the FSM.

Unless your car is pre 1976 or thereabouts, you don't have one.

Be thankful !!

At least on the 76 and earlier they were kind enough to put a drain plug on the oil cooler so you could get that 1/2 quart of dirty oil outta there

Nothing in the FSM about change interval, just to clean it with benzene. Is that Benzene? And how much is it from the dealer?

I forget where I saw the replacement cycle. Might have been in the maintenance manual, as opposed to the service manual. For sure not many people ever replaced them. I used to clean them with kerosene.

Pelican sells the screen for $17.25.
