I found out that I permanently modified my valve cover by overtightening the valve cover nuts on my OM 617. I found this out in a strange way two years after I had done it. While dropping the oil pan to bang out a dent from hitting a rock and to replace the oil pump strainer which was damaged from the dent I found a strange chunk of aluminum sitting in the pan. I looked around the lower part of the engine with a light but found nothing, mystery remained but suspicion was the valve cover. Then shortly after during a valve adjustment I found the part of the valve cover where the studs go through and meet with the valve cover seal was a match for the chunk of aluminum.

Mine is still well sealed following several years and speeds up to 136.2 MPH - who knows WHAT that does to crankcase pressure and I routinely run the engine up to 5150 RPM. Of course, that represents very few miles, like maybe 30 or so. I did the sticky sandpaper on the table saw table trick and so far it's working. I tightened the cam cover down with my 1/4" ratchet so it isn't overly tight. I don't use sealant though if it works for you I say "Go for it".



I DO have an oil leak somewhere that I haven't been able to find but it's down low on the left side and I never need to add oil (or other liquid) so it isn't much whatever it is. My crankcase blowby is plumbed to a catch can on the fire wall and there's never much in it when I drain it after each meet so I don't have much blowby.

I thought I’d follow up and say my valve cover no longer leaks. I just did a 200 mile road trip with highway speeds and LA stop and go. No more leaking.

I’m on a roll. I recently fixed a leak at the turbo u tube, the drain tube, the blowby drain and the oil filter. No more drops in the driveway and no more burning oil stink in my garage after a long trip. I’m very happy.

I guess I should have watched the $2.99 video, but then I would have felt a wee tad guilty about posting the fix here. Given what I did in the above photos, my guess is that he files down the bosses a bit. It seemed to work for me.

Mine were all chewed up as you can see but I still wonder why it works. Like, how does squashing down the aluminum and deforming it make them longer? Shouldn’t it be the opposite? Maybe the shoulders get all uneven with those ridges and the clamping force isn’t even because you get the cover torqued down unevenly/lopsided?

I should mention that I wasn’t really scientific in this in that I cleaned my head. There was some stubborn sealant residue on there left by the po. I had never cleaned it off. Also I installed spring washers because somebody (me?) had lost the old ones. So I guess I’ll never know for sure what the culprits were.
