Amazing discovery on engine shock-- Mach4, did you read this?

I am changing the mounts on the 240D and I bought the rubber shock mount pieces for the engine shock/damper, intending to change those as well.

Imagine my surprise, when, while under the car, I discover that ALL the rubber pieces on the lower part of the engine shock/damper are GONE!

Nothing there!

I wonder if the previous owner had never installed them, but had installed good mounts and as the mounts deteriorated (I have had the car for 7 years/80,000 miles) the lack of shock/damper rubber started to make itself heard.

I am about 1/2 way through changing all the mounts including the T-mount, needed a longer Allen wrench for the inner ones, although all came off without major problems.

After seeing Mach4's work on the urethane-filled mounts, I'm tempted to make a set like that for the car, but also a last-forever set for the engine shock/damper.

Anyone know what the hardness of the rubber on the shock damper is?

If it's the Shore "A" scale, I'm betting between 40 and 50. 70 would be as hard a tire tread, and I don't think it's that hard.

I'm also thinking about toying with the hardnesses and making a version that has thinner damper pieces of different hardnesses.

Your opinions please, especially if you have done anything on this damper.

All my shock dampers have fine so I haven't had the opportunity to play with casting that. I would however agree with your 40-50 range for material. 70 would be too hard and the 30 I found to be optimal for filling mounts would be too soft.

Post some pics when you get a chance.

Thanks for your helpful observations!

I have not bought any molding supplies so this might be a while. Have to get the 240 in running condition, then I'll make these as back-ups or for sale, have not decided.
