JB3 deleted his SLS using a kit that I think is under $350, but you'll have to ask him for specifics on the price. Here's that portion of the thread.
Not every small FWD car is a Kia Rio . Our Corolla is light years nicer than a 2002 Kia, and extremely durable/reliable.

a new Fiesta RS comes to mind as one transverse mounted fwd I would buy. Maybe even a Lada Samara "Sputnik".

I cant afford anything new, not even remotely new. Which means anything I buy no matter what it is is going to be old. And old economy cars are far worse for DIY than intelligently designed cars like 123's, where you can actually see stuff, and get to stuff, and replace stuff etc.
I removed the valve cover on my 240D to replace the gasket and do a valve adjustment which I was able to do in a couple of hours despite never having seen the inside of an engine before in my life. The valve cover gasket on my damn 2000 4 cylinder GMC Sonoma pickup just cost me almost a grand because it leaked and shorted out the plugs, which in turn took out the coils. The plug wires are routed over the top of the engine beneath the fuel injection crap BETWEEN the engine and intake manifold and down the other side to just in front of the bell housing. That means that just to get to the blasted valve cover gasket you have to take the whole effing throttle body or whatever it is off as well as the intake manifold. All in the name of "downsizing" and "economy" and cramming as much stuff into as small as space as necessary. To hell with that. I'm done with economy. I never want to hear the stinking word again as long as I live. - Peter.

I love these 80's Mercedes. I bought a new car once in '06. I wont do that again.
I rebuilt my W126 sls pump with some orings from a local supplier. Cost about 5 dollars. Been over a year, Still no leaks.

I find our Corolla about as easy to work on as the 300SD. It is a little more cramped in some places, but it makes up for that in having a diagnostics system that can tell you where problems are coming from. Speaking of cramped, ever try your hand at an OM617 turbo starter? Yuck. Nothing on the Corolla is that bad. Also, a lot of things -- such as the air filter housing, air intake hose, and plastic valve cover cover (not a redundancy) -- are removed in a few minutes' work and make life much more bearable. Spark plugs last 120k and are the EASIEST thing I have ever done in any car. The car is also well designed and has a generally good fit & finish that holds up well. Even if a 2003-2008 Corolla would be too expensive, the 1998-2002 generation is at least as good and has the same drivetrain, etc. What's more, it has no 30-year-old vacuum or AC systems to deal with. That's awesome. I know you hate the word economy, but let me leave you with this: 33-35 MPG mixed, 40-42 MPG highway. -Jooseppi

Buy the wagon, assemble the parts for a standard spring conversion.
Take all the sls baloney off the wagon, post a for sale ad for these items, and chuckle happily as some forum member pays you money for these parts. Install standard spring setup, forget about forever. Go to the bank, take out 5 hundred dollars in singles (approx a sls shock or two), spread on bed and roll around in the money saved while laughing. Return to bank for safe keeping. Removing the sls from the wifes wagon was the best thing ever done to it.

I think you are quite right Peter - quite right in the way that you have to buy something you want to own. There is nothing worse than having to fix something you don't really want. Owning and fixing worn out vehicles is enough of an emotional ride with out having to deal with resentment too!

If you prefer to keep the car original, you can hold on to the parts. Nothing in a standard coil conversion requires any permanent mods, its all plug and play, bolt on bits. Just an option to consider when you look for a car. Sometimes stock arrangements are needlessly expensive and make it less likely someone will keep the car on the road.
