Used IP pump, what to check for ?
After looking in various threads I have not been able to find a good lead.
Perhaps somebody can steer me in the right direction or provide some hints. I have located a used IP supposedly taken from a 300TD. According to the seller, it has had only diesel fuel run through it and was removed from a totaled 220K mile car. Is there anything that can be checked besides free rotation and port cleanliness prior to making a purchase? The IP has a later model lift pump and the vacuum shut-off still attached which would cover the asking price if serviceable. Thanks in advance. Being new to the forum, it is amazing how much help there is available here. Wish I had realized long ago how nice the W123 cars really are. The parts and build quality is awesome. |

I think that's all you can check without taking it to a Bosch shop.

You could pull a delivery valve and make sure it is not rusted. If what the owner says is true, it should be fine.

Bought it.......
For $50 I could not go wrong, appears to be a decent pump.
Local Bosch dealer quotes 2-1/2 to 3 hours at $120/hr for a bench test. Any ideas where in the San Francisco Bay area this can be done cheaper? |

If you install the Fuel Injection Pump yourself that will cost nothing except the Cost of a new gasket for the front of the Fuel Injection Pump.

Yep. $50 is a steal and your car's engine is the cheapest "bench" tester you are going to find.

You can't beat that with a stick; especially if you didn't have to pull it. These IPs rarely fail internally. If it were me, I would install it and test it on my own engine. Don't even bring it into a shop unless you plan on paying $$$$ to have fully rebuilt.

Also, why are you condemning your current IP?

Get while the gettin' is good
Thanks for the replies........
Nothing wrong with installed IP, just wanted to have a good spare on hand. Plans are to keep the MB for a long time and since parts in the Bay Area are plentiful and fairly inexpensive, I am picking up stuff that might be needed later. Got a good transmission with all bolts-ons for $50 that later tested fine on a dyno at Peter Schmid transmissions, full 300D interior with 4 door panels for $20, complete AC-Heater unit with blower for $30, etc. etc I did "splurge" and get the Sanden conversion from a forum member, but what a nice kit. Spending so much time off shore on ships, it appears that the "need two of everything train of thought", has carried over to land transportation. Overkill for sure, but gettin while the getting is good. Thanks for the suggestions..... |

Holy cow, those are steals! $20 for an interior? $50 for a tranny?
One important thing in storing an IP is to suspend it in oil -- otherwise, it may seize. Whunter posted about some IPs that a friend had stored on the shelf, out in the open air... after eight years, most were junk.

Storing.....
Another benefit of being on ships.........
Long term storage of parts, coat everything in a light coat of oil, WD-40, Marvel Mystery Oil, just about anything, and then seal it well with visqueen or other non-breathing material and keep the air away. Store in a cool dry place, and parts will last a long, long time. |
