I guess it all depends on how you are judging the engine. I have never changed a serpentine belt before, so I can't say it is easier or more difficult than V-belts. I do know that I have never heard a V-belt squeal like a pig and I've never had to replace a belt tensioner. Sure, the belts are a PITA to replace but I don't find myself doing it very often.

Shoot me now but I think the OM602 is a better engine than the OM617 .

Most belts of both types last at least 50k....so its not really something changed that often unless you drive a LOT.

61x is a tractor motor. 60x is a slightly refined tractor motor. Personally I prefer 60x for crossflow. Everything else is either easier on the 60x or about the same from a PITA standpoint...

I dont think we can lump all 60Xs together now. 601,603,602 yeah pretty simular to 617. but 605,606 are a good bit more advanced. DOHC!

But also electronically controlled, for me this is a pretty big negative.

I've done more extensive repairs to my 601 than my 617, and found it very easy to work on. I was able to replace the timing chain, pull the cam, and replace all the lifters in a matter of hours....I've done a chain on a 617 but it was a pain, you have to remove the entire thermostat assembly off the engine to even work on the chain tensioner etc...
For durability and overall awesomeness: 617, for ease of work and refinement, 601/2/3 On an OM601 you can remove a few nuts, pull the air cleaner, and have decent access to the starter for replacement.
