W124 602 Timing chain R&R procedure question

Hello,

I need to change the timing chain on my 1991 W124 602 . I have all the tools... but I would like some real life input on procedure...

1) I will be using the timing chain retainer at the cam gear

- Do I need to remove the timing chain tensioner or do I just cut the old chain and carefully wrap the new one down arround with everything tensioned ?

Any other tips or input would be greatly appreciated

thank you

before you cut the chain, you should remove the tensioner.

After that, it would not really make a difference, but you might as well leave it out.

Then, when you go to connect the new chain, it should be removed as well.

----moral of the story: leave the tensioner out. You are responsible for pulling up the slack of the chain as you wind the new chain in.

Thank you...

also the OE instructions state that procedure dictates removing the fan/clutch is this necessary or can it be left on ?

Not sure how much room you have in the w124. But if you can turn the crankshaft by hand with it in place, props to you.

I think mostly, it facilitates removal of the fan shroud if you don't have the split design.

Someone else should have a better answer.

Chain R+R

'Can be done without removing the Fan And Clutch.

It's just easier without them in the way.

Your main concern is "Keeping your Engine Timing".

I'd be Looking at the Sprockets for both the Timing Chain and the Oil Pump Chain.(Worn/Damaged sprocket teeth exacerbate chain wear.)

Consider also removing the vacuum pump.
