My brother's former W123 snapped a coil when I lifted the rear off the ground to work on the suspension. Ended up just putting new springs in along with the work I was doing to it.

Not much, it was almost dark when I got home.. I crawled my head under with a light and there was no evident damage and no leaking shock.

The right rear wheel was a little hotter than the left. And I noticed I need new rotors pretty soon. That was it.

And the winner is....

Right rear wheel bearing. Between 1/16 and 1/8 of play in the wheel when I moved it in and out, consistent up-down and front-back. Oddly, no sound when turned (albeit, unloaded). Part on order.

Checked brakes, springs, links, and axles. Everything else looked great.

Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions. Much appreciated.

PS: on the BOOM issue, I still doubt that was a bearing noise. However, I did my lower back in pulling the two rear wheels and crawling around under the car, so the fuel tank investigation is postponed. I am not going to drive the car anyway, unless I have to.

maybe the boom is unrelated and you just drove over a plastic water bottle or something.

Someone else suggested that too. I cannot imagine what kind of water bottle would make a sound like a dead blow hammer hitting an empty oil drum....

If you did your back in just finding the problem perhaps you need to reconsider doing the wheel bearing yourself? Those slotted nuts are up for a serious fight.

Point taken, though yesterday was bad timing (back was already iffy, would not have done stuff like that if I had a choice).

Frankly having looked over two DIYs on it my appetite for the job has waned considerably. I am going to let someone else do it.... but will watch intently as....

I realized yesterday that my TD also has a growling bearing, and I am pretty sure it's the rear.

Fun times!

300d = 117k

300td = 170k

Both US cars, in miles.

One time with the military, I was at a machine gun shoot. A group of us were about ten meters behind the firing line. Someone decided to be funny and make an MRE bomb using the heater from an MRE and a plastic bottle half full of water. When it went off, it was so loud, the guy shooting the M60 turned around and looked. We got talked to about that one.

Detail update

I am happy to report that having taken someone along for a ride on the weekend, it seems that the bearing sound in my wagon is either the right front or the driveshaft center bearing.

Oddly I have never, ever had a wheel bearing issue in any of the other Mercedes I have owned (since 1997), three of which were much higher mileage and two in decidedly worse shape than the pair I have now.

On my 85 300D, owned for 24 years and which has 429k km on clock, I have had one front bearing go and that at about 350k km. I had the drive shaft centre bearing go much earlier - probably at about 170k km. It made a roaring sound that reverberated through car. The wheel bearing much less noise and usually only when turning.

I have also had stuck calipers sound like a bad bearing or worse on my 72 and the 85.

Actually I meant to write in the earlier post I have never done ANY bearing on any of the cars I owned.

Just weird that the lowest-mileage Mercedes I've owned, the 300d, needs two at once (center bearing is making noise too).

I guess that tells us what comes of not driving these cars (previous owner was elderly, car was very low miles when I got it). Also, of course, time marches on and stuff just plain gets old after too many years.

What does a bad center bearing sound like? Sometimes i've been getting a sound like keys jiggling coming from the car whenever i'm approaching a stop and I have a curb on my left reflecting the sound of the car back to me.

Worn bearings normally make a grinding or rumbling sound that may change when the bearing is loaded or unloaded. In my case the howl was a warning that a massive failure was happening.

The center bearing can also make a rhythmic brushing sort of sound (drove a parts car once that did that).

Jingling keys is a new one on me. Sure it's exterior to the car and not something inside a door or outside mirror?
