W126 300SD Rough Idle Vibrations

Hello All,

Just got my dad's 300SD back on the road after having the turbo rebuilt.

Some other things we did:
-New Lemforder Motor Mounts
-New fuel filters
-New air filters
-New MB breather tube
-New valve cover gasket
-New turbo drain tube and seals
-New oil pan gasket
-New oil strainer
-New turbo u-pipe and seals (still to be installed)
-New rack dampener bolt

Photos!

I am still getting some rough idle vibration out of it. I've tried adjusting the rack dampener but that made no difference.

I am wondering if this might be an injector related problem. I few years ago I put new injectors nozzles in (monark). They were NOT pop-tested and balanced at the time as the local diesel shop got all pissy with me when I told them I bought them elsewhere. Time was limited so in they went.

So could non-balanced injectors cause idle shaking? If so, can they be pulled and sent out to be balanced at this stage in their life? I do believe Greazzer is our guy on here for that.

-Kris

Yes, they need to be balanced for a smooth idle. Pull them and send them on...

It can. I would have them balanced simply because they weren't in the first place. Every once in a while, I install new nozzles in a set of injectors and they are spot on. Most need a few shims to get the set close to each other.

On some cars, you need to adjust the idle as well as the rack damper bolt, to achieve a smooth idle. I have found that as these cars age, not all are happy to idle at the original spec.

I'm going to pull the injectors and send them out to Mark for test/balancing. eaton is right, should do them since they've never been done.

I do wonder how the spring in that idle adjust screw is doing.

I was getting some oscillations in the idle too.

If I was getting the idle issue both hot and cold, I would focus on the injectors.

If the problem gets worse the hotter the operating temp gets, then it could be either in my experience.

I was taught by a real old-timer that you should adjust the rack damper bolt after at least 15 minutes of highway driving, and then you only have 20 minutes or so to work before you need to repeat the cycle. I have adjusted mine in mall parking lots, a pawn shop parking lot, etc. If you can't get a sweet spot, experiment with nudging the idle up just a bit.

The '83 SD I had only briefly before I got creamed by a driver blowing a red in it, drove me half nuts trying to set it up (even with the new style bolt). I eventually realized it was only happy idling slightly fast and even then I had to get the bolt adjusted just so.
