4 speed Linkage Help Needed

Help! I have a 4 speed Getrag manual from an '83 240D in the S-10 and I'm starting on the shifter installation. I have the 1-2 and 3-4 linkage rods in place w/o issues but the reverse seems to be a bunch too short - like 2" or so. I have the shifter pinned in "N" so I'm pretty sure the shift arms are as they should be. The only possibility seems to be that the shifter mounts on quite an angle - is that right?

A pic of one installed and with the linkage in place would be a great help. I Googled it but had no luck. I was even questioning if I had the shifter backwards but that doesn't seem to be the case.

As a reminder - this is the all aluminum case trans with the reverse shift arm at the top rear of the trans case. My shift rods seem to like it if I put them in from the back (case side) so that the clips are out toward the rocker panel. This is NOT what shows in the Haynes manual but they don't specifically address the various transmission types.

I can extend that rod if needed for my application but I want to be sure I'm starting from the right place.

Thanks for any input you may have.

Rig up a temporary linkage and see how that works. If does go with a permanent fix.

No available pics? That would REALLY help. How about a FSM link?

Closest I can get is this - my W201 with a five speed gearbox

Kind of shows the angle on the dangle.

I can do a different angle if you need it.

Thanks guys! It does look like it's rotated with the shift levers toward the engine which would allow me to hook up my linkage.

I probably should explain - I pulled the complete trans/flywheel/clutch/shifter assembly from an '83 240. All the rods were marked so I know where they go and no adjustments were messed with so I expected them to fall right into place. I think the "issue" is that I need the shifter to sit more or less straight up and down and the factory installation assumes that the shifter assembly will be tilted as it sits much further forward in the car.

It's starting to make sense but the pics would be helpful.

With the aluminum case Getrag am I right that the front shift arm on the trans is 3-4? That makes the center arm 1-2 and the rear arm R (I know that the rear is R because it only has 2 positions).

I'm not finding much on-line on this.

Thanks

Dan

What uuuuup, Corn Dawg?

Shifter linkages? Oy. Let me go dig around in my room... under these books, below these OM61X timing parts... ah, there it is! My Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars Technical Data booklet from January of 1980. Ah yes, January of 1980, when President Carter proclaimed a grain embargo on the Ruskis, the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific railroad was liquidated, and I was running money between House Speaker Tip O'Neill and... well, I digress.

Anyways, I sincerely hope that these charts are of assistance to you in your journey, Cap'n. They of the ye olde venerable-e irone boxe trannye because the newfangled allu-minium weren't out then yets in January of 1980.

I appreciate your efforts - but that's not the trans. I think those are iron case. On mine, the front two transmission shift levers point down and the rear one points up. Exactly the same only different.

Why do I always get the weird stuff??!!

Yup, that's the iron box. I think I called that out somewhere in the stuff I wrote.

But, I just thought of something! The Russian EPC is up!

The link is in the thread I linked to above. Google should offer to translate the page for you, just in case you're not fluent in Russian ().

Mölyapina 05-23-2014 09:52 PM

BTW, do you realize that you posted about a Mercedes MANUAL transmission at 7:22? That's kind of funny.

Dan Stokes 05-24-2014 08:12 AM

The Russian EPC helped a little. At least now I know it's a 716.214 trans. Unfortunately they didn't list which shift arm is which. I THINK I have it right but I'd like to verify.

I decided to lengthen the reverse shift rod and leave the 1-2 and 3-4 rods as is. It all depends on where you mount the shifter assembly and I think I have that sorted. I'll post pics in my build thread as I get everything mounted.

Some Libraries may have the Haynes Mercedes-Benz Diesel 123 Series 1976 thru 1985 Manual or even a Chiltons Manual might have Pic of the Transmission.

The one in the Haynes Manaual does not say if it is Steel or Aluminum

The Pic has all of the Levers on the Transmission pointing upwards at an angle between 12 O'clock and 1O'clock all of them at the same angle.

The Reverse Lever on the Transmission is at the middle Bottom and connects with a long straight Rod to the Left most Lever on the Shifter. That is also the Longest Lever on the Shifter.

The 1-2 Lever on the Transmission has a Shorter Straight Rod that connects it to the middle Lever on the Shifter. This is the Shortest Lever on the Shifter

The Front 3-4 Lever on the Transmission has the longest Rod and it is bent (the bend is upwards; goes up a short distance then is flat and then there is a long decline down to the Shifter Lever) and it connects to the Right Lever on the Shifter.

All of the Rods stick into the Levers on the Transmission from the outside in through the Rod.

When you go to Google Images and search for: Mercedes Manual Transmission linkages you will see the Pic I am describing and others. Apparently Mercedes Src has some pics posted.

Dan Stokes 05-24-2014 09:31 PM

Thanks! Again, I wish they had marked which shift arm is which. Still, I going ahead assuming the front shift arm is 3-4 (I think it is). Check my build thread for pics of the shifter in place.

I need to reference that picture, thanks so much for posting. I need those three arms with the rubber bushing's in them.
