Especially when the car is cold, the engine makes a loud hissing sort of sound when I put it in drive or reverse. Any ideas?

Also look at the fan shroud to see if it is anchored where it should be. If you have a bad mount, the fan may be rubbing against the shroud, more easily if it's a bit low.

The only thing that I can think of that would make a hissing sound would be a very old and dry belt.
