Two tricks that might help the "instrument cluster removal" are:
1) undo the clip underneath the car that secures the tach cable. this will buy you another 2" in yanking the instrument cluster out. 2) put some protective cloth on the top of the steering column and on the sides as you'll get to monkeying with the cluster and it will mark up the vinyl surrounding it.
