so let the preglow relay dry out for a few hours...
now the GP light goes out in around 35-40secs. its seems like the preglow relay clicks as soon as you turn the key. or like a second after. perplexed in pixberg

Oddly enough it may not be fried. Sorry I did not notice your last post before posting this. A constant 25 to say 40 seconds indicated may still be useable.

The glow plug relay is well built and the internals should be sealed against water if it was not tampered with. There is a pinhole breather on the plastic guide pin of the 5 pin connector, which should not let any water in because of the angle it is mounted.
My glow plug relay failed permanently on, rather than try to fix it I used that to my advantage and made it into a really nifty manually controlled system.

just so i understand tho.
so when glow plug light goes in like three secs... when i start the car does the relay then click off? or does it still continue to stay on for the remainder of the 20secs? knowledge is power.

Unless you have an afterglow timer, the relay will open when the key is released from the start position. (Provided it hasn't timed out before the key is moved to the start position.)

The Glow Plug Light is only a prompt for the Driver; the Light does not turn the Relay off. After the Glow Plug Lignt goes off if you keep the Key in the Preglow Position the Glow Plug Relay continues to work until the internal Timer Turns the Relay off. If you ignore the Glow Plug Light you will get about 30 seconds of Preglow Time (the Glow Plugs will heat for 30 seconds) and the Timer turns the Realy off disconnecting the voltage to the Glow Plugs. If you turn the Key off and back to the Preglow Position you can start another 30 second Glow Plug Cycle as long as you ignore the Glow Plug Light and don't turn the Key. When your Starter is cranking your Glow Plugs are on all the time that the Starter is cranking. With the exception of a little bit of Trouble Shooting potential if a Glow Plug goes bad the Glow Plug Relay Light has no Brain. That means that the Glow Plug Light has no way to tell what condition your Engine is in or your Starter Motor and Battery are in. That means the Glow Plug Light may not be the best indicator of how long you sould Preglow. For Myself I watch the Light to see if it operates normally but I hold the Key in the Preglow Position as long as I feel like doing that. That way I determine how long the Glow Plugs will be on.

When I took apart my 240D, I had a problem with the glow plugs staying hot, very hot. The ground was not connected from the engine block to the chassis. Might look into that.
