'85 300TD, What is this filter & where do these hoses go?
 

I found two hoses going through the firewall near the steering column that are not connected to anything under the dash. Can anyone tell what they should be attached to?

The first hose is from the top of the injection pump into a white plastic thing next to the ALDA. It goes from here directly through the firewall.

Second: what is this filter:

It looks like an inline fuel filter but the right side goes directly through the firewall and is disconnected, while the left side splits in two and goes to these two parts on the left fender well: http://imagem.webphotos.iwon.com/100...PM0.648412.jpg

Well, one of them (a small thin, black plastic hose) is a vent line, coming from the vacuum valve. It goes into the firewall, to nothing, I have mine going into the engine bay, my mechanic said that is okay too. I posted a similar inquire early this week... And the filter looking thing is a vapor filter I believe. Not a fuel filter like I used to think... Hope this helps your situation, one thing is for sure, who ever said the 300D is a simple car never took a good look at the vacuum lines...

Based on the pic I think
#1 - shutoff
#2 - vent to atmosphere
#3 - aux vacuum connections - lock, a/c stuff etc.
#4 - I took this off of mine so those hoses are not there.

Allow me to elaborate on #3
 

That little filter is sometimes inserted in the vacuum lines to prevent oil from being drawn through them and ruining vacuum components. Sort of a way to see if the diaphragm in your vac pump is leaking any.

The filter (actually strainer) is not an original 123 part. It is an item from a newer model which was recommended in an old Star magazine. If you search deep enough here, you can probably dig up some old threads with all the details. Basically the "filter" is supposed to provide a visual warning of oil in the vacuum system, as would happen if the vacuum pump diaphram failed. In the picture, I'm not sure if it is installed in the right place or not, but if you dig up the old threads you can probably figure it out.

the little fuel style filter in the vacuum line on my car is starting to look a little dirty by I still have good vacuum it seems. I'm going to change it and see how fast it dirties up again. Can't just regular dirt from the bleed from all the vacuum compoents inside the car dirty the filter up ? I'm not sure.
