Why new steering reservoir cap design?

Noticed I didn't seem to have a perfectly tight seal at the top of the steering reservoir on the 98...so I ordered a new cap from Mercedes....Part # 0014662705.

Instead of a flat top it looks like it has some sort of opening....see pic.

Anyone know why the design change?

This is for your 98 E300D?

Maybe a pressure relief valve? The older style pump with integrated reservoir tended to leak from the seal. So maybe this is an effort to release occasional high pressure?

Yes, the 98 E300D. And yeah, pressure relief is what I was suspecting.

You have to give it to Mercedes, they are one of the few automakers I've seen that release updated parts. Other make no changes after a part is released unless it's been part of a recall.

I do have a steering fluid leak somewhere...maybe my fancy schmancy new cap will slow it down!
