Well that ruined my mileage
While driving my daughter to her violin instructor I noticed my Fuel gage did not match my trip odometer. I got in the habit of setting the trip od every time I fill up, I do this to track my mileage and I've had fuel gages go bad on me. I loaned my car to my teenage son to run some stuff over to Gramma's and go to work, apparently along the way he took a detour, a big detour, and he didn't want to get busted so he reset the trip od. He could of asked. He could of said " Excuse me Father but may I borrow the 'Benz to pursue and impress women of loose moral character?" Hell I would of let him. If he didn't help me make the BioD I would of been really upset

Just be thankful that he didn't try to Ferris Bueller the odometer.

Don't know what you are talking about. You want the mpg per tank or mpg of your car. You still have all the numbers to calculate the average mpg. You expect young adults to do thing like this. There are worst, much worst, things young adults can indulge themselves in. So relax and don't even say a word.

And that might be a fortunate thing or at least young son's intent.

Make him put a couple bucks in the ashtray when he makes his detours, and make sure the back seat gets cleaned well.
And make sure he has an 100% impermeable (ahem) filter in his wallet and that he will use it. Some kinds of dirt don't wash off.

I would never trust the fuel gage to determine mpg. I know you are just checking consistency, not going for absolute accuracy, but it wouldn't be much harder to do it right. Note the gals used to fill-up (completely) and divide by the trip meter reading, reset the meter for next time. Occasionally, on a long trip, compare your odometer to GPS or highway mileage markers and calculate a "scale factor" for "actual miles".
