Timing Chain Master Link Question
Hello to the group. This is the first time crimping the new timing chain I've installed on my 240D. The master link that came with the chain includes the two oval links that are to be placed in the middle of the link and at the end of the master link pins.
Prior to placing the master link through the chain itself I wanted to see how the 2 oval links would fit over the master pins. I could not get them on by pressing with my fingers. Are they supposed to be that tight going onto the pins when using the crimping tool? Thanks |

They are supposed to be tight.
For the outside one the Head of the Timing Chain Crimping Tool has a position for pushing the last Oval Link on. It is the sidethat has a tiny Magnet built into it. I am not sure how you get the inside Links started and I cannot easily visualize it. I am going to speculate that you flip the 2 links facing the Radiator to the Side and install the Master Link. Use the proper Head on the too to press the center Oval Link onto the Master Link Shafts flush to the Oval Link Face. You gently pull the Master Link back and than flip the 2 sides of the other links in front of it with its Rollers and find some way to press the Master Link on through the other links. I have not used the tool so I don't know if the Tool has enough adustment to open up enough to push the link like that. One the Master Link is pushed through use the Proper Head position to install the outer line and the reposition the Head to crimp. The above stuff is speculation on My part but I have the Crimping Tools that I have examined and a New Timing Chain that I never installed bacause the Original is OK. And, both are boxed up and store for several years so I have not seen either of them for that time.

Using the Pic the Link with the Black Line represents the Master Link. This is based on how I think it can be done but not on My experience.
Sover the Master Link into the both sides of ther rear part of the chain with the Rollers. That is the Master Link, a Link on eac side, a Roller on each side and a link on each side. You hand on to the Rollers marked in Red and flip the 4 Links in red out of the way. You shove the Master Link all the way forward and you press the new Oval Link Plate Flush to the end of the Master Link. Then you pull the Master Link back gently. You flip the 4 lniks in read back into position and you insert the 2 Rollers in read. At this point I don't know if you can use the Crimping Tool to push the Master Link through the Forward Links or not but you need to do that. With the the Master Link all the way through all of the Links and Bushings on the Chain instal the last Oval Link Plate with the Proper Head position on the Toole and then reposition the Head to crimp the Master Link over.
