what is that lobe on the 2.5TD oil pan?

While changing the oil and investigating my 93 300D I saw this extra sump thingy on the oil pan bolted down with 10mm head screws. Does serve any purpose other than making oil changes more expensive?

I have a 86 190D with the 2.5 602 n/a engine which is the non turbo version of your engine and it doesn't have the extra sump I think turbo engines need more oil
