Isnt this the same car which was on ben's whirled - in which the owner sanded the car himself for paint.

The shine and flawlessness is show car quality.

Very cool. Great photo too. The angle really shows off the TD's nice lines.
It has a unique look, I like everything about it.

Plus one on that! I am wondering if he made it or found a vintage one...it is very sweet!

Highly doubt he found it. I know the air cooled crowd has some pretty sweet roof racks and I tried building one out of conduit once. I really want one for my 240D. Slap some hubcaps on it, add port-o-walls, and chop a coil so it's slightly lower and it's golden.

Are there a lot of nails on the roads out there? Three spares?

He modeled it after the ones that were on the old VW beetles. He told me that he made 2 of them, but should have made more. Maybe I can talk him into producing them, as I am sure there is much interest here. I will try to get some detailed photos when he comes over.....Rich

There is the fourth inside the car, and I am sure he was just delivering them or bringing them back from the tire shop.

Yes, I was just joking. I had thought of putting a spare on the roof of our glk250. The diesel glk comes with no spare. In the USA, they put semi runflat tires on the car, but in Canada regular tires and some goop to fix a puncture. I bought a collapsible spare, but even it is hard to stow. But decided against the roof basket option.

To be honest, I don't like the rack on that otherwise pristine tdt either. More something for an everyday beater. But I do love the looks of your friends car!

That wagon belongs to a good friend of mine here in LA. He is an accomplished metal former in addition to many other hobbies. The front bumper is also custom made and he's sporting an early SL steering wheel I believe. The original paint is fading on the hood but it doesn't seem to matter much due to the overall condition of the car. He has been EVERYWHERE in that car. Pushing 400K miles. It's his daily driver and we have made many trips to the local yards and loaded it to the gills with goodies. Only once was he too tired to wash the car himself and he brought it to a car wash. I think he should tell you the story himself but lets just say that was the last time he will ever go to a car wash .

I've been found out! I had to post the photo here (it was attached to an email I received), as it shows how very cool the wagon is. I was sent a few more photos, and was given permission to post them as well. I will post a photo of another one of his cars later. Wait till you see this one, and I thought the blue wagon was cool!
