Lumpy seats, saggy door cards, rust under emblems and non-turbo? $30k?

PUH-LEASE! Put the crack pipe down.

It can't be "mint" with rust coming thru the rear hatch tri star, period. The bench seat seat belts are not in the keepers. I won't pick it apart anymore but it's NOT mint, and it's not a car worth more than $6K.

A couple of observations. First, at least in the photos, the paint on the hood does not look that great. Second, why does a turbo car have a clock instead of a tachometer? I wonder if it was a NA car that was fitted with a later turbo engine. In that case, it's a bastard, not worth a fraction of that asking price.

Hell the white wagon looks like it still has the new car smell. I wonder what that smell was like back then? I have a feeling it smelled like a furniture store, the wood, the leather, the horsehair mmmmmm.

I'm positive they had another that was in very good condition and was the same color a few months back.

I don't think we need to pick the car apart....I think we need to pick the seller apart..

This is a nice wagon and few weekends of work and 2 grand could make this guy look really sweet! and I like non turbos. Its a nice car, complete and the paint isn't bad..

I just think he added one to many 0's. I would be really happy with this wagon if it was priced accordingly!

My Euro wagon is a factory documented 1985 TURBO with a big clock instead of a tach.... just saying... It also has power windows and the auto climate control, underbody skid plates, headlight wipers, manual sunroof, factory alarm system, leather interior not MB tex, oh and did I mention a drivers Air bag?...

I think we all would be! But it's not!

At that price, cars get picked apart...

It was mainly an example of mint condition versus not.

That said, just slow enough to be seen by one and all!

Out of curiosity, I ran the VIN and it shows as being originally equipped with a 617.952. So it was a turbo car from the factory.

TD rear cargo area re-upholstery

So I was looking at the pics of the 55k 1979 Ebay TD someone linked, and it looks like the rear cargo area has been re-upolstered.

I have surmised this by the fact that there is no seam between the vertical and horizontal carpet pieces of the spare tire cover. My 85 has a seam, as does the "Carpet Kit" MercedezMotoring was selling a while back for $1200.

Do all TDs have a seam at the spare cover?

Nitpicky, but I was just wondering about this seam. I can see why not re-creating it could save an hour worth of labour.

Cheers,

And here's to winning 100 point Restorations at Pebble Beach in 2060 with this minute detail!!!!!

The turbo version came on some 1981 models and all of them had a clock not a tach IIRC.

BTW I owned a 1980 wagon and it was not slow off the line- in passing power yes, but not in normal urban traffic.

1981 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Turbo Diesel | GR Auto Gallery
  • It has an aftermarket radio.
  • The dash has cracks.
  • It is missing some pieces of the windshield trim.
  • You can tell there is rust behind the door seals at the bottom edge.
  • The front seat back is pretty worn out.
  • The second row seat appears to be missing the seat belt receivers. Or at the very least the elastic that is supposed to keep them above the folding seat bottoms is ripped out.
  • The front map pockets are scuffed, faded, etc.
  • The wood on the glove box door is lifting.
  • The carpet that is supposed to cover the third row folding seat is missing.
  • The spare tire cover is pretty trashed. I've seen better ones in junkyard TD's.
  • There's corrosion and rust in the engine compartment.
  • Rust behind the emblems on the tailgate.
  • Fog lights are faded.
  • All the inner door trim around the windows is shrunk.
  • The nets on the back of the driver's seats are limp.
  • The rear seat is torn.
  • The wood trim is cracked pretty bad.
  • Third row seat is also missing the seat belt receivers.
  • Holes drilled in the rear first aid kit cover for the aftermarket amp.
  • R134A conversion?
  • Looks like at least one rust hole in the floor pan.
  • Oil leak(s).
  • Rust pimples showing up on the front fenders.

That is not a collector's car. It's still a great looking car I'd be proud to drive, but I'd park it on the street and pick up bales of hay in it too. It's far far away from a garage queen.

Exactly what I was thinking. Far and away from anything near a $30K wagon. Two things that really turn me off are the "CD player 'upgrade' and the R134 'upgrade.'" Nothing churns my butter better than knowing I have to un-fork someone else's kludge of an "upgrade."

The dealer couldn't even button up the air cleaner before taking the pictures; that is just sloppy.

I retract my earlier comments, I just noticed this one has 133k on it, the one I saw was the same color, had all original accessories, and only about 72k on it. They must have sold that one and found this one....I was there in mid March. I agree this one does have some issues....and 30k is dreamland. You can pick up a few year old E-class for that!

It might be worth $5-7k on a really good day.
