Is W210 low oil indicator hypersensitivity by design?

Lots of people seem to have same experience. In my case, did an oil change without a filter change, guesstimated the amount of oil to add with intention of gradually topping off. After driving 50 miles or so, minimum oil level message appeared. Added about 1/2 quart and it's now at top of dipstick range. Did MB really design it to be THAT sensitive? Message at half quart low seems to be what others have experienced as well.

In a word, 'no.' Not that I ever experienced in 14-years and 131K miles with my W210 '99 E300TD. The one time it illuminated the notification - the engine actually needed oil to be added.

The only time mine has come on was when I had an oil leak that showed itself over the course of a long trip. In that case, the oil was off the bottom of the operating range on the dip stick at the time the indicator went on.

My '97 E 300 D will complain unless the level is near the full level. I have heard from others that had similar sensitive oil level sensors, so I have assumed it is normal for my car. The wife hates getting messages from the car, so I try to keep it topped up.

I'm unfamiliar with the way the sensor is setup on a 210. Is there any way to adjust it? I'd be annoyed if I were getting a message halfway to the add mark.

Thankfully mine doesn't use or leak a drop of oil....it would be a pain to be continually topping off.

My 334,000 mile 617 uses oil slowly enough that it's ready for a change by the time it gets down to the add mark. My 26,000 mile Kawasaki OTOH uses oil pretty fast above 6000 rpm, which is about 80 mph in top gear. I do most of my WOT upshifts at 9500. Consequently I'm adding oil every few hundred miles.

I had posted a similar concern. I have been paying more attention to it as to when I get the "Warning" it is usually at Freeway speed between 60-70 MPH at normal operating temp. I have no leak but does burn about a quart between oil change. I do need to check the Oil Sensor next time I change Oil.

Both of our cars tend to complain when the oil level is about halfway on the dipstick. The '96 neither leaks nor uses oil so it's a non-issue; the '95 does a little of both so I get the light occasionally. OTOH, the former car ('87 300D) needed to be at the 2-quart low mark before the light would come on. Don't know if it's due to variations in the float switch or something else.

Jeremy
