Protecting One's Autos

I am so mad! Go out to get something in the wagen so I can get ready for a funeral and find that the driver's door covered in egg!

So would a car cover be a good idea? I have her garaged at home to prevent damage but there isn't even off street parking here.

Thank you all for the help!

Other than moving to a gated community complete with security guards, not much. IMHO, card-access gated communities with a manned security guard shack at the entrance/exit are the way to go nowadays. Petty crimes all the way up to home invasions seem to be on the upswing.

A car cover will give the thieves something to steal or rip off the car. Just wash the egg off and keep driving.

Change where you live? Hardly anything happens like that around here, and I am by no means in a "gated community".

Get a wide angle dash camera that can double as a 24/7 surveillance system when the engine is OFF.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to your TD. The best thing to do is park it in your own garage but that does not sound like an option. I wish I had better advice but people are going to be A-holes no matter what you do. It's just a matter of time before you cross paths with one.

I'd say just clean the eggs and move on.

On a related note if someone throws an egg at your windshield when you're driving DO NOT turn the wipers on. The egg will obstruct your vision to the point you'll have to stop. Some gangs in Chicago (and probably elsewhere ) use eggs to stop cars and rob/hurt/kill people.

Are you in college right now? In twenty years of driving, the only time I've had one of my vehicles messed with was when I had to park in a parking deck at college. Somebody ripped off the hood ornament from my Lincoln Town Car. Stuff happens at college. If it's too much for you to risk your wagon, you might consider leaving it at home and getting a beater you don't care about for college duties.

Car covers get really gross after a while, and can trap moisture. The biggest problem I had with a car cover was the neighborhood cats spraying it. The cover got too disgusting to touch.

I like the dash cam idea.

A Little Off Topic: In the early 80's I use to string treblehooks under my dash to stop radio theft. It worked. They got my tapes and radio knobs and thats it.

I am at Oma's helping her get ready for a new chapter of life. I was only going to be out here until end of May, but family is first.

The reason we have numerous eggings is because of the very close proximity to the High School. Normally a neighbor will see it soon enough the egg hasn't turned to glue but since he has been sick and I have been busy, it had to have happened at least a day before.

Good points about a car cover! I have a classic Volkswagen I been meaning to get a cover for because the paint is getting damaged, but I didn't think about the large population of stray cats we have back home in Arizona. Guess will have to build a shack for it or give up on the paint and just lessen its value with a paint job in the future.

I was thinking about getting a dash cam because of my Autism, but decided at the time rather not spend money right now. Also, I only have one cigarette lighter and it is used by the TomTom. I really like more options, but hate messing with original wiring. Had an idea! I could charge the battery of one then charge the other and I bet I would be just fine. Man you all are helpful!

That is scary! Thank you so very much for sharing this invaluable safety tip! It is these nuggets that make Peach Parts a good resource!

It isn't because of College, it most likely is due to the very close proximity of the High School. At the University, so far the only issues have been door dings. This next semester I am planning on parking in the transit lot and taking the light rail to campus. It is just too expensive now that the funding is no longer available.

Eaton, thank you so very much for your sympathy! The egg mostly washed off, the exception is the rubber.

Good point about people being jerks, though wish they didn't do so much damage...
