$120 is likely a fair price, but it's something you can do for the price of a gasket (under$20) once you have the tools needed for it.

It is NOT difficult at all, ONCE YOU HAVE DONE IT! Until then the idea and the fear of the unknown really can make the novice get scared.

Before you touch anything on the motor, take a wide angle picture of the engine bay. It'll help putting it all back together.

Next, I recommend getting some engine degreaser, and TOTALLY soaking down everything. From fender to fender. Spray it all down. Then rinse it all off with a garden hose.
Don't worry, you won't hurt anything.

Then take pictures again. Clean, things look different!

Now go to the diesel giant page, and print off the 4cylinder valve layout, and write down the feeler gauge sizes he lists for the non turbo motor, and go to sears and buy em

Then go to northern tool, or harbor freight and buy a pair of long handle 14mm open end wrenches. Take them to a muffler shop and get them bent and ground to fit around the springs and injectors. Home made Valve adjustment wrench info

First, yes, I will have to consider doing a diesel purge. May be mandatory at this point.

No, I did not pay for the compression test. Salim's nice that way, offering free diagnostics. I honestly have no idea how he did the test, don't know if he removed the injectors or what the heck he did.

Yes, I'm in Colorado =P And valve adjustments by a shop cost $120. Prices have been pretty consistent no matter which shop I call. Last time they were adjusted was a year and a half ago.

ETA: The blue smoke was already present before the compression test.
A compression tests takes about an hour for most mechanics. I doubt he did that for free so it was probably not done.

Reading back on your posts, is it true your problems started after filling up the tank (please confirm that)? A few teaspoons of water in the tank will promote algae growth but not ruin your engine (tank strainer pickup is about an inch from bottom and that little water won't make it to the engine), but if you got a gallon of water from the fill up that could ruin the injection pump and injectors. When you changed the fuel filters, were there any water?

If you had a valve adjustment a year ago, don't worry about doing another valve adjustment for now. Try running it from a gallon jug of diesel in the engine compartment. If that restores normal running, than I would drain and flush the tank.

I think I killed her...grinding noise on the way to work, then loss of power... mild oil splatter on the drivers side of the engine, couldn't get her started again...
