Adjusting ALDA back to stock location.

Today I noticed that the ol' 300 is blowing a ton of smoke during kick down. I drowned out an old Buick.

I checked the set screw on the ALDA. It will not turn counter clockwise at all, so I believe someone in the past has gone crazy and adjusted it all the way out.

I've heard that you can only adjust the ALDA 2 full turns out, so would turning it 2 full turns clock wise bring me back to the stock location?

Not necessarily. The setting was optimized when car was produced but has certainly needed adjusting since then (though not as much as has evidently been done). I think your best bet is to adjust and test in small increments....say 1/4 turn at at time. Find that sweet spot where the black smoke just barely goes away.

Or leave as is and just manage things with your foot.

I never notice smoke trailing behind my 300D even after removal of the alda.

ALDA?

Same with my 85. It seems the 85 don't behave the same as the older MY's with ALDA removal.

Your car is broken.

Sure anything you say WM. Does it smoke? Not from the drivers perspective. Is it visible from a following car? Maybe.

It runs normal, will cruise at 75-80 if I ask it to. Max is over 100, Boost will go over 14psi if I disconnect the regulator (I have it regulated to 11) Boosts to about 5psi a 60. MPG is 28-30 most fills.

funola, Why do you think that is? I have blocked off the ARV and the EGR besides removing the ALDA. The drivability is improved 100%. Before it wouldn't boost below 60 mph. The ARV was inhibiting it.

Sorry, missed your question somehow. I don't know why. I am still learning about the 85 differences from prior model years. It does not seem to make a difference in smoke or how it runs whether my ARV or EGR valve is disabled (BB's in the line) or not.

I heard the ARV was to keep the boost low until the EGR wasn't open and the engine was operating in the more efficient state. Basically the ARV is a anti-smog device.

I too removed all the ARV and EGR lines and electrical bits. The EGR and possibly the ARV had vacuum leaks and since NLA my only option. Man what a difference on performance!

Removing the ALDA not only improves power, but also improves efficiency (20ish versus 34M.P.G (best)/25M.P.G. (average).). I was told it help on stand still acceleration to have it, but just made things worse. Right now the ECU isn't operating, so if that has no affect, then going back to no ALDA.

Hope this helps.
