awesome, i want to know how it interfaces with the vacuum system. i hope to do remote ignition later on and i know this requires an actuator of some kind.

Very nice.

I installed a unit in my car and it works perfect with the vacuum system. It actuates the lock rod which is tied to the vacuum valve. The drivers side is the only one needed.

I used a very cheap chinese unit that has worked perfectly for the past year.

Did you install new electric door locks on all the doors or just tie into the vacuum system like mach4 did? Seeing as how i have a desert car and it seems to lose a new rubber component every week now that its being driven, i am thinking about doing away with all the vacuum in the doors.... dash too, thinking about building a 3D printer just so i can make my own attachments and actuator mounts.

If you (or anyone for that matter) could make a little DIY article on this, I'm sure a ton of us would be very grateful!

This would sure save on tumbler and leaf wear....I found myself replacing my driver door handle assembly about a year ago because the original had worn out so much

I don't have time to do a DIY article but here are a few pics of what I did which should help. Note that my way may not be the best way. I did what I did based on the parts I had on hand.

This is what the virgin mechanism looks like. The red arrow points to what you must attach the solenoid actuator to.

Below pic of work in progress. The solenoid actuator (circled in yellow) is from a Peugeot 405 fuel door lock I have laying around. It is temporarily in that position so I can measure the length of the rod (green arrow) that I need to make. The solenoid will be mounted inside the door once the rod is made. It requires removal of the original rod (red arrow) so the knob no longer functions. Not an issue for me since I can lock the doors with the remote or key (from outside). To unlock a locked door from inside, remote is not needed, just pull the latch. Circled in orange highlights the temporarily removed metal connector for clearance so I can take measurements. In the end it was unnecessary.

The red arrow is the door knob rod. I have an extra rod + clip (green arrow) from a parts car that will be bent.

Circled in red below is the remote control unit. For mounting, it is just zip tied to a harness. I bought one of these more than a year ago and another one a few weeks ago from China. I chose the cheapest one on Ebay that I could find (they all look the same) it was under $12 shipped. It is a Bighawks unit. The unit from a year ago had a wiring diagram but incomplete making it useless. The unit I just received came with no documentation. I searched the web and found some lousy instructions and wiring diagrams and after a bit of work figured it out. For our cars, basically you have to tie 2 pairs of wires together and connect them to +12 and ground in order to configure the controller for a pulsing signal that reverses polarity to the solenoid actuator.

Blue circle is the headlight switch where I took hot at all times +12V from (red wire). Pull the knob with vise grips protected with a a cut hose then a 24 mm socket. Green circle is where I connected ground.

After I was done, I had to put the plastic liner back on. The OE adhesive was all dried up and wouldn't hold. I had an idea for a low strength adhesive! Mashed up cooked rice! Works great! Biodegradable too! I'll find out how great it works when it comes time for removal.

It's only been a day but what a pleasure to have keyless entry on the Benz! I will do my Jetta also. Just bought an actuator solenoid similar to Universal Heavy Duty Power Door Lock Actuator Motor 2 Wire 12V | eBay
for the Jetta. I think the included hardware will make the install much easier.

Here's a video showing the action of the inside door lock knobs to the remote.

I have not used the key to open and lock the doors since installing the remote. It is the nicest mod I have made to the 300D. I liked it so much I also installed one on the VW. For $15 in parts and the labor to install= well worth it.
