Since I have never shortened connecting rods on a manual tranny before I would not know. If its easy though, thats good! I just got a photo from the salvage yard and it seems as though the 5 speed they advertised is a 4 speed. One of the numbers scribbled on the paper reads "716". Back on the hunt...
Will a 717 433 tranny fit?

433 is dual mass wrong side starter wart I believe.
If you are paying less than 1500 for a 5 speed that fits a W123 you are probably getting worked over. If they were cheap and readily available, we'd all have them. Even at 1500 that is still across the pond and another 500 to get it shipped into the states. Get a 4spd, w 2.88 rear (or 3.07 if its a 616) and be happy. Even if you get the trans, the 5spd shifter for the w123 is unobtanium.

Ok good stuff, I'll do a 4 speed swap like everyone else. With a 4 speed the cars rpm's will be lower or the same as they are now. I wouldn't swap the diff however just the keep that acceleration there. These 716 trannys go for pretty reasonable prices...
Thanks for the help

IF you need any help with your 4-speed swap, I'd be glad to give you some pointers. I've been swapping my 4-speed onto my 240D with the OM617 for awhile now (havent had the time to get around to it) but the project is in its final stages.
Your 1984 should have a 3.07 diff already, so you'd be good on that front. Also make sure the flex plate is either neutral balance, or that the flywheel be match balanced to the flex plate (automatic). 5-cylinders are inherently inbalanced, and some of the time the flex plate was adjusted to compensate for this. Also make sure when you cut the front part of the driveshaft, that you get it balanced with the back part. It is balanced as one piece.

Can't even tell you how many swaps I have done at this point. Some "pro" tips:
1. Break the hydraulic line at the joint inside the car. Dont try to put it on the slave cylinder after its mounted (or mount the slave or unmount slave or take if off at the slave cylinder. 2. When installing the trans, rotate the trans counter clockwise a bit so that the arms clear below the floorboards and then rotate as you get it in closer. 3. Make sure the pilot alignment tool is easy to get in and out.

I just use a 3/8 inch extension with duct tape wrapped around it as my clutch alignment tool. It works every time. Just wrap tape around it until it fits snugly into the clutch disc leaving part of the extension out to go into the pilot.

I've done this in a pinch as well and it did not work. Alignment tool is $4 and available at every autoparts store, you just have to know what to ask for. S10 pilot tool is almost identical, the angles on the teeth are a bit different.
