I have a '85 2.2 auto and an '87 2.5 turbo manual.

The 2.2 runs just under 3500 rpms at 70 mph on the speedometer.

The 2.2 is not louder than the later 2.5 turbo when running at the same rpm and both are quieter than the earlier 617 models. If your 2.2 is loud it may be indicating a problem?

I believe in '86 the W201's switched to a larger brake prompting the switch from 14" to 15" wheels. If you need tires, you can buy a taller 14" tire if you want to lower your rpm's slightly.

-My 2.2 190D was definitely louder than my 99 E300.
-How is the hood pad? Maybe get a new one and see if that helps.
-Is the antenna motor working? If so, you can get a new antenna shaft off ebay for pretty cheap. They corrode and fill up with gunk over time and need to be replaced.
-Also, my car had an antenna adjuster which allowed me to keep it low to not attract soot when driving.
-Mine was a 5-speed and would do about 70mph at 3000 RPM if I remember correctly.
-Regular average of 42mpg. I should have never sold that car!
