Sunroof Pan Sealant

The sunroof pan in my '85 300TD is leaking tons of water every time it rains into my car. The drains are clear and it seems like there is a seam on the pan itself rusted through. I have a complete good pan, saved from my last parts car and I want to install the whole thing as a replacement. My recollection is that there is some sort of sealant between the pan and the underside of the roof of the car. Does anyone know what that sealant is?
Thanks,

Shane

If I remember correctly there isn't sealant there - there is a seal at the front (that people often struggle with 'cos they don't drop the pan) and a seal on the sliding roof at the back and then two bristly bits that allow water to drip into the pan which then should drain it to the four corners of the cabin (and hopefully out of the car!).

I think he's talking about the butyl rubber that seals the actual pan itself where it is attached to the roof of the car. not the upper moving part, but the ENTIRE pan that's inside the car...

I realised that (I think) - I don't remember there being any glue / sealant / gunk on mine when I pulled it out all those years ago. But then again my eyes are old and bent...

I think the entire roof of the car has a sound deadener that sandwitches between the SRpan, and the roof... I don't know if there is any glue there...

Yeah there was a lot of closed cell foam between the head liner and the steel it was about 1cm thick (on the floor it was more of a bitmastic substance). The English translation of the FSM doesn't seem to contain instructions for removal and refitting of the tray - I'll fire up windows (wish me luck) and see if I can find it in my German FSM copy - sometimes there's more information there.

Thanks for the help! I looked at my replacement pan and it looks like a foam gasket that is thicker around the back of the pan than the front. I wonder if there is a part number for it.

Oh yeah - I should have just looked on EPC for a head refresher

Thin foam seal (I think the front just gets more crushed) for tray to roof part number is

1237820098 according to this =>

ELECTRIC SLIDING ROOF. Fits: 1980 Mercedes 240 D Sedan | Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta

I still haven't fired up windows - will do so this evening when I get the little ones in bed...

Ok, here is what you use.....go to the hardware store and buy the weather stripping used for doors, perfect fit!

I had put the same thickness all the way around at first but it was too thick for the front, so I had removed it and used a thinner size.
