Feeler Gauges

I finally got tired of fumbling my valve adjustments and invested a very little money in the proper tools.

MSC Industrial Supply (mscdirect.com) offers a full range of metric tools. I bought 0.1mm and 0.35mm feeler gauges from them. No more messing with "metric equivalent" sizes and making the adjustments a little too loose or a little too tight.

The gauges are 12" long and 1/2" wide making handling of the tool very secure. MSC offers the individual Starrett gauge leaves for about $3.50 each.

Today's valve adjustment went smoothly and right the first time. I recommend making the effort to find the correct metric tool for this common job.

Last time I checked, Sears in the USA carried a nice, not expensive feeler gauge set with the correct thicknesses for our valve adjustments.

Ironically, Sears Canada doesn't carry that good metric set... and Canada is metric.

o.k. guys

I know one can find metric feeler gauges out there. The thing that makes these especially good is the 12 inch length. They are easier to handle and more secure feeling in use.

I am doing my best to understand what's good about that. And I am making absolutely no progress.

It's much easier when you can hold the gage like a pencil rather than a cracker.

With the stubby fold-out ones it can be tough to get angled right if you have hams for hands like me.
