Rear Suspension Noises
Here's a tricky puzzler from a '83 300CD... I've got a "wubba wubba squeak" in my rear suspension that's got me stumped.
It's a noise that comes and goes to some degree and it happens with the engine off and the car just coasting. I thought it might be a missing bushing on the left end of the rear sway bar, but a friend says it might be a sliding joint on the half shafts. While the boots are intact, they are 20 years old and still are on the original lube job (?). Everything seems to be working well, it's just a source of continual worry... Any thoughts? Any buyers?

How about taking it to your local garage and have them put it up on the lift (one that doesn't lift the car by the wheels). Put it in gear and have someone carefully listen.
If the noise does not present itself then again carefully watch the tire. You may have a tire out of round. (The wubba wubba part) I had a similiar problem on our old '79 240D. Remarkably I found that the rear disk was a little warped from some moron using about 750 ft/lbs to tighten the steel wheels. |
