Door locks - What's supposed to happen?

When I bought my car, the door locks were defunct. I have now replaced the master vacuum switch in the drivers door.

If all was well in mudville, I believe the doors would lock when the car was either started or put in gear, and unlock when the drivers door was opened. Am I right?

It would help to know what vehicle you're asking about. The older cars are vacuum controlled and do not respond to engine or trans inputs.

If you are talking about your 81 240D, no.

On that car, doors lock when you lock the driver door, and unlock when you unlock the drivers door.
Also the fuel door and trunk will follow.

For this to work, none of the vacuum lines can leak, nor can any of the actuators...
Also the yellow line needs to be connected to the vacuum pump...

^Agreed. No auto lock on these cars when the key is turned.

On new cars, this is normal and in my mind, unwanted.

I had that on the Prius I rented on my last business trip. It was quite annoying.

Auto-correct auto-mistaked. I hate typing on a phone. Sorry.
