When you mention "braking" that brought the guide rod mount to mind. My '83 300SD is doing something similar to what you describe on slow heavy left turns (like in the driveway) and when braking. I'm pretty sure it's the driver's side guide rod mount on my car, based on where the sound is coming from.

Be sure that you have the correct rims on the front end. Be certain that the tire balance shop did not put wheel weights on the interior of your rim....Don't ask me how I know all this!

Just got back from a 1500km roadtrip after changing that bearing. Not a single sound! Thanks a lot guys.
