Once again, thanks to everyone on the forum for all their input. You guys are as persnickety as a Ukranian Grandmother at the fish market. Love it. Keep the thoughts coming and again, please scan those pictures, what I really want to know is if anything is off.

With respect to comments on price, once again I appreciate everyones comments, it's fun to go off on this stuff. But it might be helpful to keep in mind that when considering what something costs money is only one part of the equation. And how much anything costs, of course, is highly contextual.

What are you looking for, and what is the top-end on your budget?

I went to see an almost perfect 1-owner 2005 E320 Sedan 21K miles, loaded with every option X-heated seats, garaged since day 1 in Texas yesterday. 30-day bumper to bumper warranty, $19,998 firm.

if YOU take some good pictures of the car, and post them here, we'll pick them apart for sure.
I'd HAPPILY get any of the vehicles I listed in the same condition as that one for 1/2 the price...

Beautiful car. Pity about the pin stripes. Worth 36 thousand bucks. Only you can decide. But for me it's simply nuts. If I were rich enough not to notice dropping about 36K maybe I'd go play with the dealer. But otherwise. No.

we arent arguing the difference between a 10k and 12k nice diesel wagon. we are talking about a WILDLY overpriced vehicle. 36k is a joke level. when considering what something costs money is the ONLY part of the equation. im not sure what else is involved you could be referring to. you need to be looking at that wagon and asking yourself why its worth 26 thousand dollars more than other nice wagons priced at 8 to 10 thousand at the high market rate.

if money is no object, then perhaps it is the car for you, but i dont think objecting to paying 3 times more than the market rate is something you should describe as persnickety.

if you buy it, i have some parts to sell you. OEM used but nice calipers, three thousand dollars each.

Well, if he'd identify what he's looking for, and what is his budget, then perhaps we could help him?

If $36K for that 30+ yr old car with 136K miles on it is in his budget, which apparently it is, anything goes then?

I can buy 2011 E350 Bluetecs all day for $30K or less, with 100K less miles on them, still in Mercedes-Benz Factory Warranty.

some just like the w123 diesel wagon. and having one that they think is near pristine, and heavily serviced to perfection means to them that it won't need service anytime soon. (they're wrong...) some have nigh unlimited funds, and price is no object when it's what they want, and that's just fine. but SERIOUSLY, it's overpriced.

I can do EXACTLY what has been done to this wagon for 10K less... possibly for 20K less... MAYBE for 30K less...

it's all about being serious and finding the perfect beginning vehicle and servicing it PROPERLY and getting EVERYTHING working, and clean, and replace anything that is not up to par.

heck...
I don't know where he lives, but for 36K I should be able to find a under 140K mile wagon in the right color and condition, bring it to perfection, and DELIVER IT TO HIS HOUSE!!! then BUY A CAR NEAR HIM, fix it, and drive it back to my house...

This would be one of his best options......

There's a couple three members here that could do the mechanical PPI and work necessary to bring a MB car up to reliable, all at a reasonable price.

Wait I'm confused,

The purchase price of $36,000 includes a very clean low mileage w123 wagon, and a kilogram of cocaine right?

Definitely a DEA setup.

Seriously though, I bet the classic center could restore one for that price....

Over-priced.

You said you wanted to get feedback on problems with the car that we see from the pictures. Well, here's a big one you can't fix: the odometer reading.

The $30K+ price point for a W123 300tdt realistically is reserved for pristine show cars that have 50k mi or less. But hey, if you're Jerry Seinfeld or Jay Leno, who are we to stop you.

Rust?

Adt21,

If you're still considering this car, you might want to make sure the exhaust piping is not rusted, as it looks like rust in one of your pics. I smell lemonade.

looks like some decent surface rust. for the price wanted, it should be either 100% stainless steel, or powdercoated. At the very least it should be new.

Like you said it is fun to go off on this stuff. Well here it is at least a dozen people here agree that the seller is dreaming, and unless you like fullfilling other peoples dreams I WOULDN'T. Then as far as that offer you were given to repurchase it back for 31K sounds like he is charging you 5 grand for a test drive.

Guys,

Arrived into LA late last night, brought along wife and 9 and 7 year old daughters. Staying at The Line hotel in Koreatown, lobby all blasting Jay-Z while we had some out-of-sight spam/scrabbled eggs/rice/kimchi thing for breakfast. Roy Choi is a genius.

Will go take a look at the car in couple of hours. Looking forward to 30+ hour road trip singing 99 bottles of beer through the blazing Western US if the car checks out (or a least chewing up a few book tapes while the children disappear into their iPads wondering if mama and papa have at last completely gone around the bed) or some time with the children in LA if it doesn't.

Once again, my thanks for everyone's thoughts and insights. The board is a great resource. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

best

Andrew

so did you go ahead and buy a 10k car for 36k yesterday?

did you find out what made this 300TD worth 26 thousand dollars more than any others?
