124 blower regulator question

I have a 91 300 E parts car. One wife has a 95 E300D. It has the cabin filter, so it shows a different part number for the blower regulator, but it appears to hook up exactly the same. Can i use the older regulator?

I answered my own question.

It did work, and now I have a working blower. The "porcupine" in the older 124 is just a heat sink, and it wont fit in the car with a cabin filter, however, you just switch the cap on the blower end with the newer style cap, and use the screws from the newer style to attack it to the newer heat sink.
The wires are a bit longer, and to be safe i wire tied them in the front of the blower cabinet.

Happiness can be defined as a working blower again!

oh, and having multiple wives... jk

This is really good news. I have a 95 and finding a blower regulator is tough. Just so I understand what you wrote, you took the heat sink off of the old style regulator and then screwed the regulator to the new style heat sink?

Electronically they are identical; the mechanical differences can be worked around. AFAIK the whole exercise was to gain room for the air filter in the later cars.

Correct, you do have to change the little black "plastic cap" on the blower end of the wire. The porcupine type bolts on in 4 points, the newer style, 2 points. The 4 bolt cap is a bit too long to fit under the blower.
