Classic Harbor Freight

I got a Harbor Freight ad in my mailbox today...

I was like, "60% off of all this stuff?"

Then I saw it.

Classic.

Apologizes but I am totally lost what does : mean in this ad?

I am just so old school, I don't look at sales ads/coupons to buy stuff....I know I know typical American thing, good deal means buy buy buy even if you never use it...

Over the years I've developed a friendship with a vendor at work with whom I have fairly regular interaction. Nice guy, hard worker, good sense of humor, a bit of a gear head.

We were chatting one day about cars and he was saying for something he was working on, he needed a pry bar. I commented to the effect that I was sure there was a HF not far from where he lived.

He kind of nodded, thoughtfully, and replied, "Well, yes, there is...but I wanted to use it more than once..."

{All heads nod knowingly}

I don't usually get/use any of the ads from HF, but my mom cuts out the free and discount coupons from her paper and gives them to me. I don't ever buy anything at HF for full price, I always pay at least 20% less (sometimes 25% off) with a coupon. As far as using their tools more than once, I stay away from electric tools. However, their sockets and wrenches can't be beat for the price. I am getting old and have problems seeing the small print on most other wrenches and sockets, so I buy the color coded ones from HF. Their gear wrenches (color coded of course) are my favorite tools, and I use them almost everyday. No need to look at them for the size, I automatically know that a 13mm is green, a 14mm is red, and a 17mm is bronze etc. These are the best tool value on the planet as far as I am concerned....Rich

That's good advice!

I'd put it on the back of my Frankenyota. I've worn out several hand-crank cable pullers, sure would be nice to back into position, run out the line, and push a button.

I also agree on the pry-bars. Metallurgy matters. I've seen HF prybars work harden and break, and of course it's only when you've got a LOT of force on it and what's left acts like a big spring that just had it's pressure released. Everyone survived but there was blood and stitches involved and it could have been REALLY bad.

I also totally agree to stay away from their electric stuff. I have wrenches and sockets from them still going strong, even a dolly I beat the hell out of....but every time I bought something electric....it died in the middle of the job...

I bought a set of 3/8" deep Impact Sockets, never used them with the air gun, and broke the 13 and 17mm. 13 with my Craftsman ratchet and the 17 with a breaker bar. split both down the sides. pretty bad, taking a 13mm nut off a 617 oil filter, and it splits.

I usually don`t buy anything unless it is on sale and I can use a 20 or 25% coupon.

I noticed the 2500lb winch is on sale for $49.99, limit is 3 at this price. Hopefully 1 out of 3 will work .

If I need an electrical tool once or twice I buy from HF. If I want one to last I'll go pawn shopping, Craig's list hunting, or wait until I find a good deal on what I want. I might want a sliding compound miter saw from home and hitatchi has a nice one I have my eye on. Checked it out at lowes and it's $480 ish. Checked my local craigslist and I found the exact model in great shape for $220....I never pay full price for something that I can easily find used or reconditioned.

The quality in tools from HF has gone up. I bought their 42" tool chest since it's very well built and has tons of space. I recently saw their 72" I think it is now offers a top box so when it's time to upgrade I'm going for the 72" bottom roller and the 72" top. Plus the end lockers to store all of my tools in cases. I could easily go find a used snap on and spend $500-1k on a bottom roller then a top and lockers. Or I could spend a little over $1k for everything.
