Any experience with a Jeep/MB 2006 3.0 CRD?

What's the consensus on this MB diesel placed in the Jeep platform? Anyone on the forum have one?

That's right. For some reason I thought there was only the one diesel that Jeep made. Forgot about the GC

Yep I have the VM Motori version. It's funny, I almost never see of or hear of the 3.0 MB Cherokee. I did see one on the highway somewhere recently but can't remember where ... I see quite a few 2.8L VM Libertys like mine, relatively speaking.
It's apples to oranges, but for whatever it's worth, my problems so far have mostly been with the EGR and other emissions stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if the 3.0 has similar problems ... however, I installed a tune that has pretty much eliminated the issues and I think the same thing is available for the 3.0.

What sort of mileage does it get?

There's a nice looking 3.0 2006 grand Cherokee for sale local with 150K. Should one expect similar durability as a comparable mb if properly maintained?

Should I run away fast?

Its a benz motor. I'd expect benz reliability from it. Is it a benz transmission? The rest of the vehicle is jeep, so I would not expect stellar durability from those parts. value? I guess it depends on the price level.

I would guess it uses the Chrysler manufactured version of the MB 5 speed automatic. MB called it the 722.6, in Chrysler lingo it's a NAG1. Quite bulletproof in either variant.

Mine, or the 3.0? Mine gets around 25 for daily commuting and up to 34-35 on the highway ... that's with the eco tune though ... stock it was more 22/30. Would be interested to know if the 3.0 is comparable ... I think the GC is a bigger car so it's probably less. The Liberty is quite heavy too though.

I have a R320 with the 3.0L, same 642 engine and wrenched on several Jeep GC at work with the same engine offered from 2007-2008. Few problems, mostly oil leaks from poor crankcase vent design. Good running engine, lots of power, smooth, 30mpg easily on the highway when in a Mercedes-the Jeep version did not do as well, one customer did better with a gas 2013 replacement. I think 22-24mpg do to the 5spd auto.
Once they hit 100k big time service repair costs-front end work (balljoints and all that) the vehicle seems to fall apart by Mercedes standards. I have noted several in the 150-200+k miles range for sale (more Jeeps then Mercedes in that range) and the photos look promising. They hold resale for some silly reason, better off with the ML then a GC I would think dollar for dollar. At the end of the run in 2009 (early winter, they made a lot of 2008.5 models) they were liquidating them at $34k CAD funds, and you could option up another 20K easily. It was a great deal at the time looking back at the resale values!
2006 would be a Liberty with VM diesel, different animal and rare around here.

I have been very very tempted to get one. I think that the 3.0 MB diesel engine is simply brilliant. A wonderful design.

However, I failed to pull the trigger (I actually found one for 27K with only 8K miles on it a few months back) on it because I am absolutely TERRIFIED by the Jeep/Chrysler vehicle attached to the awesome engine. The bad reliability stories I hear from people are truly horrid. A close friend of mine bought a brand-spanking new Dodge mini-van, and within the time he had it, it went through multiple engines and transmissions, and lots and lots of things going wrong with it. He sold it and took a bath... and it still had warrantee left on the vehicle! I was simply horrified by his experience.

YMMV.
