At first you need to set the idle speed correctly on a hot engine - its the little screw and locknut near the ELR solenoid. Once set then connect the ELR back. If you still have lopey idle - then a good bet is that somewhere the fuel system is faulty, firstly check the return banjo at the back of the pump - the OM606 had the fisher price quality item - its super flimsy, the older ones had the all steel item.

Does the engine lope even with being fed fuel from a jug?

Ok. I assume the info for setting the idle speed is in the FSM, so now that i've got some free time I'll work on that first. I did replace the seals on the banjo bolt and the clear fuel lines two years ago, and after watching the fuel flow while running I couldn't spot any bubbles. However Texas heat causes premature failure for a lot of things engine related. I have not yet run the diesel purge through it. Should I do that first or reset the idle first?

Any update on this thread?

I'm troubleshooting a similar sounding lopey idle on mine now...

This is for a '95 E300 (W124) which has a different injection pump than your '98 E300 (W210).

I'd also like to know what the solution was. I'm guessing that his injectors were the issue.
