How can differential fluid be clear honey colored after 73k miles?

The PO of my 99 said he changed the differential fluid at 81k miles. So I figured that, at 154k miles, it was due. I expected disgusting very dark brown stuff to drain out (like every other time I've done this job). Instead, it was a clear honey colored. How can that be after all those miles? Did the differential fluid fairies change my fluid last night?

Once it has been changed out... the break in wear on the gears has been accomplished... then you have new oil in there and assuming seals are good... an almost hermetically sealed system.. unless you drive in deep stuff ... I think there is a breather on top..... the second time I went to change out mine... on a 280 K wagon.. it looked so clean I put it back in...

From my oil analysis tech:

Coming out clear like that means a couple of things:

1. It has been serviced regularly and gears and bearings have never gotten deposits on them.

2. The lubricant you drained is a good quality PAO synthetic and resists heat oxidation.

3. The differential is running cool and reservoir is likely oversized allowing the fluid to run cooler.

4. PO actually used honey to fill the system with.

5. A bee hive lives in there producing honey.

Its probably good you didn't. You likely would have upset the hive and they would have come after you. I mean they're probably angry as it is living inside a differential with all those gears and what not.
